Jesus is my Friend and my Comfort

Sermon:  Jesus my Friend and my Love

Synopsis

Jesus demonstrates His sacrificial love, expressing the love He receives from the Father, and invites believers to remain in that love by keeping His Commandments (John 15:9–11).  He defines true friendship as a sacrificial relationship where He no longer views His followers as slaves, but as friends to whom He reveals everything He has heard from the Father.  The ultimate expression of this friendship is His willingness to lay down His life (John 15:13–15).  This agape love is so expansive that God gave His only Son so that believers might have eternal life, and nothing can separate believers from this love in Christ Jesus (John 3:16; Romans 8:38–39). The purpose of this Love is to bring complete joy to those who embrace Him because God is Love (John 15:9–11).

Love is not a one-time act; it is a continual growing of God’s presence.  Love is one of the fruits of the Spirit that God is trying to grow in our hearts and spirits as we abide in the Vine of Jesus (Galatians 5:22-23).

Galatians 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Love- A selfless, unconditional affection for others.

Joy- A deep, abiding happiness that comes from faith.

Peace- A state of tranquility and harmony with God and others.

Forbearance- Patience and tolerance in difficult situations.

Kindness- A disposition to be friendly and considerate.

Goodness- Moral excellence and virtue in actions.

Faithfulness- Loyalty and reliability in relationships.

Gentleness- A humble and meek attitude towards others.

Self-Control- The ability to control one's impulses and desires.

The Lexham English Bible is used in this sermon

John 15:13–15

No one has greater love than this:  that someone lay down his life for his friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command you.  No longer do I call you slaves, because the slave does not know what his master is doing.  But I have called you friends, because everything that I have heard from My Father I have revealed to you.

Jesus is in all Christians (Romans 8:9).  Jesus expects Christians to be “martyrs,” translated “My witnesses” in English Bibles.  The Compassion of Jesus in Christians urges each one to act in faith and in the Holy Spirit's leading.

John 15:9–11

“Just as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you.  Remain in my love.  If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in his love.  I have spoken these things to you in order that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be made complete.

Song of Solomon 5:16

His mouth is sweet, and He is altogether desirable.  This is my beloved;  this is my friend, O young women of Jerusalem.

Jesus would have Christians greet each other with a Holy kiss (Romans 16:16; 1Corinthians 16:20; 2Corinthians 13:12).

John 3:16

For in this Way God loved the world, so that He gave His one and only Son, in order that everyone who believes in Him will not perish, but will have eternal life.

Jesus gives His life to intercede for Christians, forgiving seventy times seven times or even more times daily in His Love (Matthew 18:21-22).

Hebrews 7:25 states that Jesus is able to save completely those who come to God through Him because He always lives to intercede for them.  Jesus has an eternal role as a High Priest who offers perfect salvation, unlike the temporary sacrifices of human priests.

Hebrews 7:25 "Therefore He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He ALWAYS LIVES to INTERCEDE for them."

Jesus Completes Our Salvation:  This means Jesus can save completely, meaning His salvation is total and eternal.  Unlike Old Testament priests, who could only offer temporary sacrifices, Jesus provides a PERMANENT SOLUTION for sin if we are willing to repent and seek His Face.

Jesus gives His all for eternal Intercession for us:  Jesus ETERNALLY intercedes for believers.  This means He advocates for us, those who ask God for forgiveness and His help, ensuring we have continuous access to God the Father's Divine grace and His forgiveness for our sins as we repent of them.

Romans 8:38–39

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus gives us continuous love as we seek His Face and be in His presence in His Spirit (1Cor. 13:12).

Philippians 3:8

More than that, I even consider all things to be loss because of the surpassing greatness of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for the sake of whom I have suffered the LOSS of all things, and consider them dung, in order that I may gain Christ.

God’s Love is so GREAT that the LOSS of ALL THINGS is nothing compared to gaining His Love that He gives to all of His friends who spiritually work to see His Face and the presence of the Holy Spirit daily.  This is why Apostle Paul spoke in unknown tongues more than the Corinthian Christians did: speaking in tongues edifies oneself spiritually; it builds you up in the faith (1Cor. 14:4).  "Praying in the Spirit" is worthy of your time, and it will help you to OBEY Jesus.  All Christians need to pray and “seek the greater spiritual gifts” (1Cor. 12:31).

In 1Corinthians 14:4 the gift of speaking in tongues edifies the one speaking in unknown tongues, while prophesying is meant to edify the church as a whole.  “You can ALL prophesy” (1Corinthians 14:31).  Be building yourself up in God's Love by perfect prayer in an unknown language.

1 John 4:19

We love, because He first loved us.

When we feel love, we love to return His love.

John 14:21

The one who has My Commandments and keeps them—that one is the one who loves Me.  And the one who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will Love him and will Reveal Myself to him.”

Jesus Returns His Love to us when we love Him by our OBEDIENCE, as Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will OBEY Me.”

Revelation 3:20

Behold, I stand at the door and knock!  If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, indeed I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

Matthew 11:28–30

Come to Me, all of you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke on you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy to carry and My burden is light.”

Because Jesus is our Friend, the spiritual burdens are light for Christians as we seek the face of Jesus (1Cor. 13:12).

Psalm 16:11

You will make known to me the path of life.  In Your presence is fullness of joy.  At Your right hand are pleasures forever.

2Cor 5:14–15

For the Love of Christ controls us,  because we have concluded this:  that one died for all;  as a result, all died.  And He died for all, in order that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for the One who died for them and was raised.

Galatians 2:20

And I no longer live, but Christ lives in me, and that life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me.

1John 3:1

See what sort of love the Father has given to us:  that we should be called children of God, and we are!  Because of this, the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

John 17:23

I in them, and You in Me, in order that they may be completed in one, so that the world may know that You sent Me, and You have loved them just as You have loved Me.

Romans 5:8

But God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Ephesians 3:17–19

That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith (you having been firmly rooted and established in love), in order that you may be strong enough to grasp together with all the saints what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth, and to KNOW the LOVE of Christ that surpasses knowledge, in order that you may be FILLED UP to all the FULNESS of God.

Because He LOVES us, He gives us His Love to fill us up to overflowing to others.

John 14:23

Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will KEEP My Word, and My Father will LOVE him, and We will come to him and will take up residence with him.

God Himself and His Son Jesus will dwell in you, if you ask your Creator in Jesus Name.

Christians are called to honestly KEEP the WORD of Jesus, and then we will have His Love in this life and in the Life to come.  "Draw close to Me and I will draw close to you" (James 4:8; Jeremiah 29:12-14).

Scriptures emphasize drawing closer to God through faith and prayer, seeking the Face of Jesus and His presence.  God promises to be near to those who seek Him with all of their heart and believe in Him.

Scriptures encourage drawing closer to God, as exemplified by James 4:8, which states, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” Other verses that encourage seeking the Face of Jesus include Hebrews 11:6, which emphasizes the importance of having faith in seeking God, and Psalm 145:18, which reassures that the Lord is near to all who call on Him.

Scriptures for Drawing Closer to God

Promises of God’s Presence:

Jeremiah 29:13-14: “You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”

2Chronicles 7:14

My people who are called by My Name [Jesus] humble themselves and PRAY and SEEK MY FACE and turn from their evil ways, then I will listen from heaven, I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land [of America].

James 4:8: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

Psalm 73:28: “But for me, it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge.”

Encouragement in Faith:

Hebrews 11:6: “Without faith, it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”

Hebrews 10:22: “Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith.”

1John 5:14-15: “This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”

Psalm 143:8: “Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust.”

Matthew 11:28: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Lamentations 3:24-26: “The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in Him.”

These scriptures on drawing near to God serve as promises of God’s nearness and the significance of placing our faith in Him and our efforts to draw closer to Him.

Jesus stated that if anyone is willing to do the Will of God the Father, then He will make His Will known to them.

Jesus is our friend, and if anyone is willing to do His Will and not their own desire, they will be informed by Jesus what He wants to be done! God is faithful, and He will keep His word. This was always true as “Jesus is Always the Same” from the Garden of Eden until today!

“God is no respector of persons,” and He respects the fact that if we are willing to obey Him, listen to His voice, and be led by the Holy Spirit, then Jesus, our friend, will draw closer to us.  God respects the fact that the more Christians are willing to listen to Him and draw closer to Him by seeking the face of Jesus in their spirit, then Jesus will draw more closer to them.

1John 4:10

In this is [true] LOVE: -not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

True LOVE is sending Christian missionaries to teach as many as possible how to be saved from sins and how Christ will cover Christians as the Armor of God.

Romans 8:29 has written that Christ dwells in every Christian to fellowship with His beloved and to intercede on their behalf to God the Father and our Creator.

Romans 8:35–37

Who will separate us from the love of Christ?  Will affliction or distress or persecution or hunger or lack of sufficient clothing or danger or the sword?  Just as it is written, “On account of you we are being put to death the whole day long;  we are considered as sheep for slaughter.”  No, but in all these things we prevail completely through the One who loved us.

Christians are commanded to overcome dangers, including martyrdom, persecution, affliction, and hunger.  Nero complained that the Hymns of Praise that the dying in the Roman Coliseum were lovingly singing in their agony.

Jeremiah 31:3

"The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying: 'I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with loving devotion.'"

John 13:34–35

“A n\New Commandment I give to you:  that you LOVE one another —just as I have loved you, that you also love one another.  By this, everyone will know that you are My disciples— if you have love for one another.”

God wants fellowship with His friends.  We are to befriend each other as He is our faithful friend every day.

Just as Jesus is our constant Friend, we are to be friends with one another in the Body of Christ.

1Peter 2:24–25

Who himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we may die to sins and live to righteousness, by whose wounds you were healed.  For you were going astray like sheep, but you have turned back now to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and He gives us His Help to know the Way to God the Father.

Isaiah 41:8

But you, Israel, My servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, you, the offspring of Abraham my friend.

James 2:23

And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him for righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend.

It helps to believe in God so God may call us His friends.  (Note: Jesus called Judas “friend” while he came to betray Him.)

Psalm 139:17–18

And to me, how precious are Your thoughts, O God; how vast is their sum. If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. I awaken, and I am still with you.

As Jesus said, He told His disciples everything the Father told Him to say.  Truly vast are the thoughts that God is willing to give to us if we are willing to seek His Face and listen to the Voice of Jesus.

Ephesians 3:17

Yahweh your God is in your midst; a Mighty Warrior Who Saves.  He shall rejoice over you with joy; He renews you in His love; He will exult over you with singing.

God dwells in the PRAISES of His people, and because you are His friends, He will rejoice over you and renew us in His Love, if we repent and seek His Face and sing His praises, audibly or in our hearts.

John 10:14–15

“I am the Good Shepherd, and I know My own, and My own know Me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father, and I lay down My Life for the sheep.

“A Friend Loves At All Times,” even to the point of moving to save your life, knowing it will cost him his life.

Ephesians 2:4–5

But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, and we being dead in trespasses, He made us alive together with Christ (by grace you are saved).

God, Who is our Friend, moved us from spiritual deadness to be alive in Him, making us “Born from Above,” in the Greek manuscripts or “Born Again” because He is our Friend.

1Thessalonians 1:4

Knowing, brothers, dearly loved by God, that He has chosen you.

Because Jesus is our Friend, He has chosen us to be adopted as His sons.

Colossians 3:12

Therefore, as the chosen of God, holy, and dearly loved, put on affection, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

Because Jesus has chosen to be our Friend, He helps Christians to be filled with love, affection, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and the other Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

John 17:26

And I made known to them Your Name, and will make it known, in order that the love with which You Loved Me may be in them, and I may be in them.”

God, our Friend, is willing for believing Christians to know His Name so that the LOVE Jesus received from His Father may dwell in us also.

Romans 5:5

And hope does not disappoint, because the Love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, Who was given to us.

Holy Spirit-inspired Hope will not disappoint, as God’s Love pours into our hearts.

Psalm 63:3

Because Your loyal [everlasting] Love is better than life, my lips will praise you.

As we seek the Face of the Son of God, as Jesus said, we see the Father, God’s Love and Friendship pour into our spirit.

John 14:18–19

“I will not leave you as orphans;  I am coming to you.  Yet a little time and the world will see Me no longer,  but you will see Me, because I live,  you also will live.

Jesus PROMISES we will see His FACE if we faithfully seek His Face.

1John 4:16

And we have come to know and have believed the Love that God has in us.  God is love, and the one who resides in His LOVE resides in God, and God resides in him.

Ephesians 5:25

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for her.

God gives His spiritual LOVE to husbands to flow through them to their wives.  Amen

Psalm 103:11–13

For as the Heavens are high above the earth, so His loyal [Everlasting] LOVE prevails over those who FEAR Him.   As far as east is from west, so He has removed far from us the guilt of our transgressions.   As a father pities his children, so Yahweh pities those who FEAR Him.

Isaiah 54:10

For the mountains may depart, and the hills may sway, but My Faithfulness shall not depart from you, and My Covenant of peace shall not sway,” says Yahweh, who has compassion on you.

When Jesus felt compassion, He healed them.  God, our Friend, is always the same, and when you feel God’s compassion, it is a signal that Jesus, your Friend, wants to do something.

Psalm 36:7

How precious is your loyal [everlasting] LOVE, O God, and the children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.

Psalm 23

Yahweh is my Shepherd; I will not lack for anything.  In grassy pastures He makes me lie down; by quiet waters He leads me.  He restores my life. He leads me in correct paths for the sake of His Name.  Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil because you are with me.  Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare before me a table in the presence of my oppressors.  You anoint my head with oil;  my cup is overflowing.  Surely goodness and loyal love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will stay in the house of Yahweh for a very long time [forever].

Isaiah 43:1–4

But now thus says Yahweh, He who created you, Jacob, and He who formed you, Israel: “You must not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name; you are Mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and through the rivers, they shall not flow over you.  When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not scorch you.  For I am Yahweh, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.  I give you Egypt as ransom, Cush and Seba in place of you.  Because you are precious in my eyes, you are honored, and I myself love you, and I give people in place of you, and nations in place of your life.

You are not greater than our father Jacob, are you, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, and his sons and his livestock?”  Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again.  But whoever drinks of this water which I will give to him will never be thirsty for eternity, but the water which I will give to him will become IN HIM A WELL OF WATER SPRINGING UP TO ETERNAL LIFE.”

"Jesus Is All the World to Me" is a hymn written by Will L. Thompson that expresses a deep personal relationship with Jesus, describing Him as a source of joy, strength, and friendship.

The hymn emphasizes trust in Jesus and the comfort He provides in times of sadness.

Verse 1

Jesus is all the world to me:

My life, my joy, my all.

He is my strength from day to day;

      Without Him, I would fall.

When I am sad, to Him I go;

No one else can cheer me so.

When I am sad, He makes me glad;

      He’s my Friend.

Verse 2

Jesus is all the world to me,

      My Friend in trials sore.

I go to Him for blessings, and

He gives them o’er and o’er.

He sends the sunshine and the rain;

He sends the harvest’s golden grain:

Sunshine and rain, harvest of grain—

      He’s my Friend.

Verse 3

Jesus is all the world to me,

And true to Him I’ll be.

Oh, how could I this Friend deny

When He’s so true to me?

Following Him I know I’m right;

He watches o’er me day and night.

Following Him by day and night,

  He’s my Friend.

Verse 4

Jesus is all the world to me,

  I want no better friend.

I trust Him now; I’ll trust Him when

  Life’s fleeting days shall end.

Beautiful life with such a Friend;

Beautiful life that has no end!

Eternal life, eternal joy,

  He’s my Friend.

This worship video focuses on the comforting and healing presence of God, particularly for those who are brokenhearted or suffering.  The song emphasizes God's closeness to those who weep.  His understanding of every tear, and His ability to provide comfort in our pain.

Key songs' themes include:

Divine Comfort and Nearness: The Lord is depicted as being near to those who are hurting, crushed in spirit, and despairing.

Healing and Restoration: The music lyrics speak of God restoring wounded souls, healing hearts, binding and making them whole.  His nail-pierced hands bring healing.

Hope and unwavering presence: God is portrayed as a source of hope that never dies, ever true and always near. He collects every falling tear and turns mourning into cheer.

Mercy and Love:  The worship music highlights God's mercy and unending love. He is a faithful shepherd who walks with us through all trials.

Redemption through suffering: It acknowledges Jesus's shared grief and wounds, through which hearts are healed.  Scars can shine as a sign of divine mercy.

This worship video is a spiritual and symbolic expression, intended to lead listeners into worship, prayer, and reflection on God’s truth, uplifting faith, and inspiring hope.  Hallelujah, Praise Him and Amen

The sermon presents Jesus as the believer’s true Friend and Bridegroom, whose sacrificial, everlasting love is revealed supremely in the cross and confirmed by countless promises of God’s nearness, comfort, and faithfulness. Believers are called to abide in Christ, obey His commandments, and allow the Spirit to grow the fruit of love and other graces, living as new creations and adopted children who walk as He walked.

A vast tapestry of Scriptures shows God forgiving sins, healing wounds, guiding, protecting, and strengthening His people, assuring them that nothing can separate them from His love in Christ. This love overflows into mutual love within the body and mission to the lost, as Christ’s friends share the gospel and comfort others. Hymn and worship elements underscore that Jesus is “all the world” to the believer—source of joy, strength, hope, and eternal life, both now and forever.  Amen
